My old fitness band finally died after an accidental trip through the washing machine, which forced me to figure out if I actually needed a full-blown wearable. I ended up grabbing the Apple Watch SE 3, mostly because the $219 price tag felt a lot easier to swallow than the flagship models. After wearing it daily for a few weeks, I can honestly say it hits the sweet spot for most people. The biggest upgrade for this generation is the always-on display. You don't have to do that exaggerated wrist flick just to check the time during a meeting anymore. It also inherited some of the heavier health tracking features from the premium tier, like temperature sensing for retrospective ovulation estimates and sleep apnea notifications. I mainly use it as a daily fitness tracker to log my runs and remind me to stand up, but having the crash detection and irregular heart rate monitors running in the background gives me a weird sense of relief. Battery life is still the standard 18 hours. It gets me from my morning alarm to bedtime, but I do have to charge it every single day. Luckily, the fast charging is actually fast now—a quick 15-minute top-up before dinner gives it enough juice to track my sleep through the night. If you live in the Apple ecosystem and want the core features without spending four hundred dollars, this is arguably the best smart watch you can buy right now. It does exactly what a modern wrist wearable should do without overcomplicating things.
