What makes this specific model slightly better than other cheap plug-ins is the tiny built-in fan. Most ionizers are completely passive, but the fan actually pushes the ions out into the room to improve indoor air quality faster. It also has a small washable filter to catch stray dog hair or large dust bunnies before they jam the fan blades.

For twenty bucks, it does a surprisingly decent job of neutralizing lingering odors in tight, enclosed spaces. However, you have to manage your expectations. Because it forces particles to settle on surfaces rather than trapping them inside a machine, you will find yourself dusting more often. It also won't move enough air to handle a large living room. But if you just need a cheap air purifier for smoke to stick in a bathroom, near a litter box, or in a tiny home office, it gets the job done without driving up your electric bill.
